Quick Summary
Ahmedabad is better placed for day trips than most people realise. Within 2 hours by road you have UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Indus Valley archaeology, wildlife sanctuaries, ancient stepwells and temple architecture that ranks among the finest in Gujarat. Most of the picks below are within 100km. A handful are slightly over, but close enough and good enough to include.
Whether you're hunting for a one day trip near Ahmedabad for families within 100 kms or a quieter one day trip near Ahmedabad for couples, this list has both covered. It also works as a broader roundup of Ahmedabad trip places, including a few that make a solid weekend trip from Ahmedabad if you'd rather not rush.
Exploring destinations around Ahmedabad becomes easier when you have flexible transportation and can leave early according to your own schedule. If you are planning a one-day road trip, check bike rental options in Ahmedabad and choose a two-wheeler that suits your travel plans.
How we made our selections
Within 100km or close enough to justify the slight overage. Family-friendly and couple-friendly appeal evaluated separately. Road accessibility checked. Entry fees and timings verified. Places that came up repeatedly in Ahmedabad travel forums were prioritised over lesser-known options with limited ground-level feedback.
The 15 best one-day trips near Ahmedabad
One does not have to look far to see that Ahmedabad is well suited for day excursions, more so than is commonly thought. In as little as two hours on the road there are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Indus Valley ruins, fine temple work and wildlife sanctuaries to be found. The following list of 15 one-day trips from Ahmedabad has been put together with some care; while a few of our choices run a little over 100km, they are close enough and of sufficient quality to warrant inclusion.
How we went about it
We made our selections by looking at what was within 100km or where the extra distance could be justified. Road access was checked, as were entry fees and opening times. We gave preference to places that get mentioned in Ahmedabad travel forums rather than lesser-known spots with little ground-level feedback. Family and couple appeals were considered on their own merits.
Quick Summary
The 15 best options
Nature and wildlife
📍 1. Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary (65km, around 1.5 hrs)
Well inside our 100km range. From November to February the sanctuary is home to thousands of migratory birds such as cranes, pelicans and flamingos. There is no better way to take it in than with a boat at dawn or dusk when things are most active. Entry runs from Rs.50 to 80.
📍 2. Thol Bird Sanctuary (25km, 40 min)
If you want something closer than Nalsarovar this is the alternative. You can expect a good mix of species during the October to March season. Plan on 2 or 3 hours for a morning out. Rs.20 to 30 to get in.
📍 3. Wild Ass Sanctuary, Little Rann of Kutch (~130km, ~2.5 hrs)
It is technically beyond 100km but we have included it as the experience is without peer. You will find the salt flat landscape and the Indian wild ass (Khur), which is unique to this part of Gujarat. An early start is called for. Expect to pay Rs.150 plus the cost of a jeep safari.
Heritage and temples
📍 4. Adalaj Stepwell (18km, 25 min)
This is the major heritage site nearest to the city. The 5-storey stepwell from 1498 is adorned with intricate carvings and makes for an easy half-day outing. It is free to enter and the light in the morning is preferable for photos.
📍 5. Modhera Sun Temple (~100km, 2 hrs)
Allow 2 hours to drive to Modhera. Dating back to 1026 AD it is a prime specimen of medieval architecture in Gujarat and for its calibre is undervisited. One could easily spend 30 to 40 minutes at the Surya Kund stepped tank. Entry is Rs.25 for Indians, Rs.300 for foreign visitors.
📍 6. Sarkhej Roza (10km, 20 min)
Home to the sultans’ tombs and sometimes referred to as the Acropolis of Ahmedabad. The complex is particularly striking in the late afternoon. Free admission; aim for the 4pm to 6pm slot.
📍 7. Lothal (85km, 1.75 hrs)
A very important Indus Valley Civilisation site with a dockyard from 2400 BCE or so. The museum on the premises puts the ruins in context and is a hit with school-age children. Rs.25. The ideal time to be out and about is from October through March.
Lakes and family fun
📍 8. Kankaria Lake and Adventure Park (Ahmedabad)
While you can’t call it a day trip, this is one for the families. The lake’s entertainment complex has it all: a zoo, toy train, water park, giant wheel and boating. You will be there half to a full day. Entry runs Rs.35 to 50 per head.
📍 9. Akshardham and Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar (30km, 45 min or so)
The architecture at the BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple is something to behold, as are the gardens in fine order. It goes well with a stop at the nearby Indroda Nature Park. No charge to get in.
📍 10. Indroda Nature Park, Gandhinagar (35km, 50 min)
You have your zoo, botanical garden and dinosaur fossil park all in one place. For those with children, the fossils alone make the drive worthwhile. We suggest weekday mornings. Rs.40 to 60 entry.
Offbeat and palace
📍 11. Utelia Palace (75km, an hour and a half)
Even if you are not putting up for the night, the 19th century heritage of this palace is worth the journey for the architecture. Entry fees vary. Best in the October to March window.
📍 12. Dakor, Ranchhodrai Temple (90km, 1.75 hrs)
A free entry to one of Gujarat’s top Vaishnava sites. Expect a lively atmosphere on Purnima (full moon), though regular weekdays are more sedate.
📍 13. Gandhinagar Botanical Garden (35km, 50 min)
Nice grounds in Gandhinagar with only a nominal fee. Makes sense to do in conjunction with either Indroda or Akshardham.
📍 14. Sabarmati Ashram (Ahmedabad)
Any visit to Ahmedabad would be remiss without seeing Gandhi’s ashram on the Sabarmati, one of the state’s key heritage spots. Not a day trip of its own but essential. Free.
📍 15. Patan and Rani ki Vav (125km, 2.5 hrs)
At 125km we are technically over the 100km mark for the UNESCO stepwell at Patan, but the artistry is too good to pass up. With 500 plus sculptures and seven stories of depth, the extra miles are justified. Many put together a full day with Modhera as well. Rs.40 for Indians, Rs.600 for foreigners.
A quick look at some picks
For the family: Kankaria Lake, the dinosaurs at Indroda, a boat at Nalsarovar, Thol Lake for something easy, or Lothal for the education value.
Couples will prefer: The quiet of Adalaj Stepwell, the carvings at Rani ki Vav in Patan, history and light at Sarkhej Roza in the late afternoon, or the peace of Utelia Palace.
Weekend stays that make sense
On the question of cabs versus two wheels
If you are heading to places like Adalaj or Thol (under 50km), a scooter from ONNBikes at Rs.300-400 a day and fuel is all the flexibility one needs for less than half what an outstation cab will set you back. For the 80 to 100km range a geared bike or car is more practical. By way of comparison, app-based cabs for the return leg are in the Rs.1,500 to 3,000 bracket.
Documents and booking process
Complete your booking on the ONNBikes app or website: pick your model and dates for Ahmedabad and confirm online. There is no deposit to put down. When you come in for pickup, you will need to be there in person with a valid permanent two-wheeler licence and some form of government ID (an Aadhaar card will do).
When to make the trip
The months between November and February are by far the best time to go. The weather is cool and clear with good visibility, and the bird sanctuaries at Nalsarovar and Thol are in full swing. You can get by in March to June if you start early, but an afternoon in Gujarat can be intense; make sure to have yourself back by 1pm. We would not recommend the monsoon from July through September as it puts a damper on most road trips and the access roads to Rann and Zainabad are prone to flooding.
Some pointers on the road
NH-48 and the state highways are well maintained, though you may find rougher patches on the final stretch to places like Modhera and Lothal. Do check your fuel and tyre pressure before heading out of the city. It is also wise to get an early start; the highway back to Ahmedabad is not ideal once it gets dark.
Common questions we see asked
Q1: What is the top one day family outing from Ahmedabad?
A1: For heritage, the circuit around the Modhera Sun Temple and Rani ki Vav is hard to beat. With younger ones in tow, however, Indroda Nature Park is more suitable at 35km away for the zoo and dinosaur fossils.
Q2: A good day for couples?
A2: Head to the Modhera to Patan area for a day of heritage. If you want something simple, the Adalaj Stepwell is only 18km. Or try Sarkhej Roza for a more subdued late afternoon.
Q3: Any weekend ideas?
A3: An overnight in Mehsana makes the Modhera-Patan route much more enjoyable. For the Wild Ass Sanctuary you will want to put up in Dasada for the night. At 155km, Polo Forest is a fine option for some nature.
Q4: What should I budget?
A4: Heritage sites will run you Rs.25 to 80 per head for entry. If you take an outstation cab, expect to pay Rs.2,000 to 3,500. With a rented scooter you can do it for Rs.600 to 1,000 all in, covering food, fuel and fees. ONNBikes has bikes and scooters available in Ahmedabad from Rs.300 a day with no deposit, just book online.
